December 2007 Newsletter
Thank you for stopping by –
This year has come to an end and we have been busy putting the property to bed for the long winter months. The leaves have gone from the trees and flowers from the plants, but there is a quiet beauty to all of this – as if the trees are holding their breath and time is standing still – a winter wonderland.
We had our first snow and there is no better place than M.B.S. to see the variety of bird and animal tracks that show up in the newly fallen snow. Make a game of how many tracks you can identify and send your answers to us at M.B.S 13210 Revelation Rd. Meadowbrook, PA 19046.
Did you know we have 2 “Nellie Stevens” holly trees on M.B.S. ????? I mention this because one of our members was in Oxford, MD for their holiday house tour and one of the houses called, “MapleHurst” built in 1880 by Captain Edward John Stevens featured a holly planted by his daughter Nellie, who was a horticulturist and propagated a new variety of holly in 1900 from Chinese holly seeds she collected at the U.S. Botanical Garden in Washington, D.C. Today there is one Holly still standing that reaches 20 feet and is distinguished by its orange, red barriers – in later years this new holly became known as the “Nellie Stevens Holly”.
We are delighted to hear this story knowing now that our 2 “Nellies” have a distinguished history. Please come by and say hello to them.
Again we would like to hear from you, our neighbors and friends, about what you like at M.B.S. and what it is you would like to see here in the future.
If you say safer and better paths then you’re right on target with us. We are working on it.
